A Special Valentine's Treat

If there's no baking involved, is it really even Valentine's Day?

Amidst all of the sugary treats that come in small packages, the best are those that aren't packaged at all. This Valentine's Day, we decided to try out a couple of popular Pinterest favorites. Being cake lovers, there were a couple that stole our hearts...

Treat #1: Peek-A-Boo Heart Cupcakes
Find the full recipe and instructions here!

Look at that batter! Cupcakes are the perfect Valentine treat to sink your teeth into. You can go with the Valentine's theme and add adorable decorations like we did. We tested out a recipe from LaurenConrad.com that was supposed to create a heart when you cut open these cute little cakes. Sadly, this epically failed (like most diy food creations that look too good to be true) but the cupcakes still turned out super cute and tasted great(most important part!).

To make the cute little hearts inside the cupcakes you need to separate the batter into two bowls. Dye one a cute color, our choice of course a pop of pink for V day. Once you have the batter dyed, pour a thin layer into a cake pan and bake for the recommended amount of time.

Once that is cooked and cooled, you'll want to get out a small heart shaped cutter. Put the cake on a flat surface and start cutting out the hearts. In the cupcake tin put batter at the bottom, place the heart in the middle and then cover it with more batter!

Bake to perfection.

Now it's time to decorate. We used buttercream frosting (it tastes amazing) and decorated them with pink and white sprinkles and little hearts to complete the Valentine's theme!

Treat #2: Red-Velvet Cake Parfaits
Adapted from this recipe

WARNING: This recipe is not for those who go weak at the sight of sugar. It's pretty much guarateed that you will eat the entire thing.

Red Velvet is practically a Valentine's Day staple. Not only is it downright delicious, it also supplies the correct color-scheme without any extra dye involved! This delectable dessert comes from Pinterest.

Basically, it's a piece of cake in a cup. Or, if you're feeling fancy (like we clearly were), a wineglass.

To make this treat, we used a Red Velvet box cake mix (shhh... don't tell Martha Stewart) and buttercream frosting. We also used some of the leftover pink cake to make the dessert look more fun.

Overall, this recipe was easy as pie. Errr... cake! We simply baked the red velvet cake, crumbled it, and put it into wineglasses along with the excess pink cake. We then piped in vanilla buttercream frosting, giving it even more sugar. (Can you tell yet that we are sugar-oholics?) We then devoured these tasty treats.

Making treats for a V day party? Simply make this recipe, replacing the wine glasses for smaller, see-through plastic cups. That way, your guests won't miss out on the deliciousness or the cuteness.

what a lovely sight.
